![]() ![]() The idea known as the bhakti movement asserts that between 6 CE, poet-saints sang bhakti from India’s southernmost tip to its northern Himalayan heights, laying the religious bedrock upon which the modern state of India would be built.Ĭhallenging this canonical narrative, John Stratton Hawley clarifies the historical and political contingencies that gave birth to the concept of the bhakti movement. India celebrates itself as a nation of unity in diversity, but where does that sense of unity come from? One important source is a widely-accepted narrative called the “bhakti movement.” Bhakti is the religion of the heart, of song, of common participation, of inner peace, of anguished protest. ![]() Professor Vishkaha Desai will introduce the event. Please join us on Tuesday, March 24th, at 7pm for the launch of John Stratton Hawley's new book A Storm of Songs: India and the Idea of the Bhakti Movement. ![]()

![]() On the other hand, that same coffee that was fueling the French Revolution was also being produced by African slaves who had been taken to Santo Domingo, which we now know as Haiti. It sort of creates egalitarian places - coffeehouses where people can come together - and so the French Revolution and the American Revolution were planned in coffeehouses. One of the ironies about coffee is it makes people think. It’s these contradictions of coffee history-its complicity in slave economies and the Enlightenment public square-that Mark Pendergrast takes on in his new book Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World. ![]() It’s a drug that makes us thinky and chatty and sociable (I for one don’t speak a human language until I’ve had my first cup). But coffee has also inspired a longstanding social tradition that shows no signs of ever going out of fashion. ![]() And like many of these substances, it tends to be addictive. Like so many daily comestibles we completely take for granted- salt, sugar, and (far fewer of us) tobacco-coffee has a long and often brutal history. ![]() ![]() People buy on emotion then make a logical case to justify it. ![]() Therefore it is essential to future pace someone to make them think of the good feelings they will have when purchase. He points out that the “relative anonymity” of an individual’s identity in a city makes it difficult for “rules of purity and pollution” to be observed and enforced in the public sphere. Amit Ahuja, of the Department of Political Science at the University of California, states that “urbanisation undermines caste”. Unlike a village, which provides a highly localised worldview and a fertile soil in which caste can flourish, cities possess the innate characteristic to rob caste of its natural feudal environment and put it in a vibrant, multi-faceted and volatile situation in which it might suffocate. The process of urbanisation, therefore, if carried out in a planned, sustainable and inclusive manner, can potentially help India mitigate the impact of all-pervasive casteism that is crippling India’s rise as a global power. ![]() Centre for Security, Strategy and Technology. ![]() ![]() ![]() It includes lots of fun activities, games and printables to work on numbers, counting, letters, basic addition or subtraction, skip counting, clocks and more! Colors like brown, gray, and purple are associated with sadness and stagnancy. These colors have the modifier bright attached to them because other shades of red and blue can be characterized as darker, which would oppositely be aligned with low energy.
